The members of the Warwickshire JLD work closely with Coventry University Law School to provide a mentoring scheme to the University’s law students. As mentors we aim to provide legal careers guidance and support to students throughout the academic year, including advice on:
How to write a compelling CV which will make students stand out from the crowd;
Filling in vacation scheme and training contract application forms;
The training contract application process as a whole;
How to prepare for and act in an interview;
The alternative routes to becoming a solicitor;
Networking skills; and
How to decide what types of law firm to apply to and what areas of law to focus on
As active young members of the local legal industry we know how hard it is making the transition from higher education to working in the legal industry, so we try make the whole ordeal a bit less daunting and a bit less stressful by providing any support, advice, guidance and help that we can. Students have really benefited from and enjoyed taking part in the Scheme, with feedback including:
“The insight my mentor has and can offer me is incredibly helpful.”
“t has given me an insight into what career I may wish to strive towards, by being able to talk to someone who has gone through what I am doing”
“My Mentor has been tremendously engaging and very helpful”
Not only does the Scheme benefit the students, but mentoring is also an opportunity for our Warwickshire JLD members to develop new skills and gain valuable experience in a supervisory role. Often we can be at the bottom of the workplace food chain, so mentoring can provide us with a rare and valuable opportunity to work in an advisory role
The Scheme has proved extremely successful since it was launched in 2015/2016 and we look forward to launching the Scheme again in September 2018!
